The underlying goal of the organization is the strengthening and empowering of young adults, providing love and support to every young adult. Special Children's Charity (SCC) is a community-based program that provides support to the young adults that have the potential for homelessness. SCC's professional staff will provide services to youths aging out of foster care, group home care, or who may become homeless in the community.
SCC assists individuals by providing personal living skills, self-help skills, and community integration while working closely with the youth, encouraging them towards higher education, and developing employment skills. Individualized training will include mentoring, shopping, managing money, and maintaining health care. Services include case management, individual therapy, support groups, behavior management skills training, and substance abuse awareness training.
Independent living skills, or life skills, are important life lessons young people need to learn in order to successfully navigate in the world when they become adults. SCC programs work towards helping young people who, after leaving a structured care environment, will be able to reach their goal of independent living, which will automatically lead to a happy, successful life. Young adults often feel as though they can take the big step towards independent living and successfully grasp all of the life skills needed to operate in the world at large without being mentored. SCC programs are guidelines that help eliminate this myth.
SCC provides Residential and Independent Living Programs, along with Support Programs. With these programs, young adults will learn the full spectrum of normal life situations in our Home Living Program. The following is a list of skills and classes that will be integrated in the company's Independent Living Program:
Eligibility is given to young single adult males or females ages 18 to 25 who may become potentially homeless after ageing out of foster care or group home settings or who are waiting for permanent housing from an external agency. We are unable to serve youths who present significant drug/alcohol issues or youths who are involuntary. We may not be able to serve youths who exhibit mental health issues if behaviors or symptoms indicate the need for more acute care (e.g. suicidal or homicidal behaviors). The youth must be pursuing or participating in a college or trade school to be enrolled in the Independent Living Program. Youths cannot be in the custody of or in juvenile probation upon entry into the program. The program is designed to provide support to youths willing to take responsible actions in their daily lives.
The length of our service will be from 12 months to 2 years for youths who are attending higher education or trade schools. Extended stays are determined by the completion of a college degree or trade school certification. Youths in our completion program can remain in structured housing up to their 25th birthday.
